Formula One returns to Silverstone this weekend where celebrations will be far and wide as the track celebrates it’s 50th anniversary of racing.

The 5.891 km track has always been a popular event on the racing calendar and the home crowd will be praying for a British winner – something that has not been witnessed since 2008. Lewis Hamilton was the last British driver to finish on top that year but did manage pole position last year. His Mercedes’ teammate Nico Rosberg was victorious in last years British Grand Prix and will be hoping to spoil the party once again.

The high speeds of Silverstone can be an advantage for the high speeds of the Mercedes’s cars and Hamilton will be hoping to close the gap at the top of the drivers championship on home soil. Hamilton and Rosberg have had their differences this season, to say the least and hasn’t gone unnoticed by Mercedes boss Toto Wolf. Although the team completed a Austrian 1-2 last time out, the team rivalry is only getting stronger.

William’s impressed last time out in Austria with Valterri Bottas finished on the podium – their first since Pastor Maldonado’s victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in 2012. Back in early March, Williams were being tipped as the surprise package of 2014 and there is no question that they have already lived up to the tag. Claiming 85 points between the two of Felipe Massa and Bottas after just nine rounds they have a chance to break the Williams points record of 175 points, ironically which was acquired with the help of Damon Hill back in 1996.

This time last year Pirelli were criticised after four drivers including Hamilton were forced into trouble resulting in teams being directed to increase the tyre pressure so we didn’t see the problem occur again and luckily this problem can all but be ruled out this year.

F1 has become a more popular sport in the last few years, but the noise which has topped the subject of conversations this year may have put a few fans off the idea of enjoying a race at Silverstone, but the fact that a British driver is in with a chance win this weekend whether its Hamilton, Jensen Button or even Max Chilton may tempt some fans to watch in anticipation.

Enjoy the race!
